About me page

Welcome to my blog! My name is Manuel and I’ve been passionate about detective novels, crime novels, and thrillers for about sixty years, a passion that shows no signs of waning. Since my childhood, the mysterious plots, perceptive detectives, and thrilling scenarios of crime fiction have accompanied me, and they continue to captivate me to this day.

My First Encounters with Detective Novels

As far back as I can remember, I was immediately captivated by detective novels as well as adventure or mystery novels. I have always been very curious, and moreover, reading helped me escape from everyday life and cope with a deleterious family. I learned to read early on, and it all started when I was about six years old with ‘The Famous Five’ by British novelist Enid Blyton. I can even say that this is what gave me a taste for reading and made me a reader forever.

Then, the ‘Adventures of Arsène Lupin’ by Maurice Leblanc quickly followed. I still remember the thrills I felt from the daring escapades of this gentleman burglar, always one step ahead of the police. Shortly after, I discovered the adventures of ‘Detective Sherlock Holmes,’ written by Arthur Conan Doyle. The brilliantly solved investigations by this London detective and his faithful friend Dr. Watson kept me on the edge of my seat for many nights.

I also immersed myself in the adventures of ‘Rouletabille,’ the young journalist detective created by Gaston Leroux. His sharp mind and talent for solving mysteries fascinated me. Then there was ‘Fantômas,’ the elusive master criminal whose terrifying misdeeds were recounted by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre. Each character and each plot transported me to universes as fascinating as they were diverse, fueling my imagination and my taste for adventure and mystery.

Essential Influences

There was Agatha Christie, the undisputed queen of crime, whose novels kept me on the edge of my seat. The investigations led by Hercule Poirot with his methodical mind and his little gray cells, or by Miss Marple with her sharp intuition, were masterpieces of suspense and ingenuity. Then, I fell under the spell of John Dickson Carr’s stories, the master of locked-room mysteries, and the complex plots of Dorothy L. Sayers, whose detective Lord Peter Wimsey combined aristocracy and brilliant intelligence.

I also discovered the world of spy novels with Ian Fleming and his unforgettable James Bond, as well as the psychological thrillers of Patricia Highsmith, where tension was woven in an insidious and captivating manner. The stories of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, with their tough detectives and dark atmospheres, added a black and cinematic dimension to my literary journey.

And then, there was Georges Simenon. His detective novels, featuring the famous Inspector Maigret, transported me to a unique French atmosphere, blending psychological depth and sharp social observations. Simenon, with his ability to depict characters and situations with such authenticity and humanity, captivated me. Maigret’s investigations, often more introspective and meditative, offered a different and enriching perspective on the detective genre, adding a new layer of complexity to my literary exploration.

Through all these readings, I traveled to various worlds, meeting unforgettable characters and solving complex puzzles. Each of these authors and their works enriched my imagination and refined my taste for mystery and adventure, making me the passionate reader I am today. Thus, through reading, I developed a true passion for detective and adventure novels, each contributing to shaping my love for this genre of literature and broadening my literary horizon.

Classical Literature

Of course, I have also read many classics of French literature. With an insatiable curiosity and a devouring passion for reading, it was impossible for me to miss the major works that have shaped the literary culture of our country. From my teenage years, I immersed myself in the great texts of French literature. I discovered the writings of Victor Hugo, whose Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame transported me to bygone eras, populated by unforgettable characters and poignant plots.

I also explored the work of Gustave Flaubert, particularly Madame Bovary, which offered me a scathing critique of society and an introspective look at human disillusionment and aspirations. Flaubert’s rigorous writing and his quest for the ‘right word’ profoundly marked me. The novels of Émile Zola, such as Germinal and L’Assommoir, plunged me into the social realities of 19th-century France, with their narrative power and their uncompromising portrayal of human conditions.

I also let myself be carried away by the poetic prose of Marcel Proust in In Search of Lost Time, where the themes of memory, time, and human relationships are explored with unparalleled finesse. The depth of his psychological analyses and his ability to capture the subtleties of the human soul have left a lasting impression on me.

Finally, the works of Marguerite Duras, such as The Lover, and those of Patrick Modiano, with novels like Dora Bruder, continued to nurture my love for contemporary literature. Their stories, both intimate and universal, allowed me to better understand the complexities of existence, while reminding me of the importance of memory and identity in our lives.

Thus, from Hugo to Duras, through Flaubert, Zola, and Modiano, French literature has been for me an infinite journey through eras, souls, and sensibilities, each author adding their stone to the edifice of universal culture.

A Return to Detective Novels

However, despite these forays into classical literature, I always returned to detective novels and crime fiction. This genre, with its captivating puzzles and thrilling plots, had a particular hold on me. The narrative tension, plot twists, and complex characters of detective novels continued to attract my interest, making this genre my preferred literary refuge. It was in these stories of mysteries and investigations that I found unparalleled satisfaction, combining intellectual pleasure and escapism.

Today, at 68 years old, I have never stopped reading every day since my first book. This daily habit has become an essential part of my life. I believe I am one of those who are completely fanatical about the genre, detective novels tha we call in French ‘Polars.’ This passion for mysteries and criminal intrigues has not only been nourished by books but also by other forms of storytelling.

The Masters of French Noir Today

Contemporary French crime fiction authors, such as Sébastien Japrisot, Thierry Jonquet, and Franck Thilliez, make an essential contribution to the genre. Japrisot, known for his psychological and disturbing stories like One Deadly Summer, stands out with complex plots and deep characters. For his part, Jonquet, through dark works like Tarantula, criticizes contemporary society with brutal realism, addressing themes such as violence and justice. Thilliez, meanwhile, explores scientific horror in captivating thrillers such as Syndrome E.

Authors like Bernard Minier, Jean-Christophe Grangé, and Fred Vargas continue to push the boundaries of the genre. Minier, with novels like Glacé, plays on the progressive build-up of tension and creates a chilling atmosphere. Grangé, with thrillers like Blood Red Rivers, immerses his readers in international adventures, while Vargas seduces with her unique style and eccentric characters, like Commissaire Adamsberg. These writers offer works where suspense, psychology, and originality intertwine to captivate readers.

Other notable figures enrich the landscape, including Olivier Norek, Jérôme Camut, and the Giacometti-Ravenne duo. Norek, a former police officer, gives his novels a striking authenticity, while Camut, with Nathalie Hug, offers intense psychological thrillers. Giacometti and Ravenne, through their esoteric plots like Le Rituel de l’ombre (The Shadow Ritual), add a historical and mysterious dimension. Each of these authors, with their unique style and vision, contributes to the diversity and vitality of contemporary French crime fiction.

The Masters of Nordic Noir

Nordic Noir, with its dark plots and icy landscapes, has established itself as a staple of crime fiction. Authors like Jo Nesbo, Stieg Larsson, Jussi Adler-Olsen, Lars Kepler, and Camilla Läckberg have made their mark on this genre by captivating readers with stories that blend suspense, psychological depth, and social criticism.

Jo Nesbo, famous for his series about Inspector Harry Hole, excels in creating tortured characters and complex investigations. Stieg Larsson, with his Millennium trilogy, left a global imprint, notably thanks to Lisbeth Salander. For his part, Jussi Adler-Olsen mixes dark humor and mystery in his Department Q series, while Lars Kepler offers breathtaking thrillers centered on Joona Linna. Camilla Läckberg, meanwhile, combines suspense and Swedish charm in her Erica Falck investigations.

These authors, with their captivating plots and exploration of human darkness, have made Nordic Noir a globally appreciated genre, bringing a unique and immersive vision to contemporary thrillers.

An Optimized and User-Friendly Blog

Finally, I want to clarify why I created this blog, despite the existence of many others on the subject. Even though many offer quality content, they often suffer from performance and organization issues: slow, cluttered sites where information is difficult to find.

In summary, these are sites that I don’t feel comfortable with. My goal with this blog is to provide not only high-quality content but also a smooth and pleasant user interface, allowing readers to easily find what they are looking for without frustration.

Many people of my generation are not very comfortable with the Internet, and I know many of them. For me, it’s the opposite. I have a perfect mastery of the subject, the creation of a high-performing website associated with a beautiful visual. I created this blog from A to Z. I optimized this website to be fast to display and easy to use.
